These are some of the annual costs to maintain the herd:

  1. Hay - We feed approximately 100 to 140 tons of hay per year depending on weather conditions. A ton currently costs $300 (a round bale is approximately 1,300 lbs).
  2. Oats - One 50 lb bag costs $18 (as of Jan 2023). Feeding daily treats of oats is a means to get horses used to close interaction with humans and administer medications where appropriate. Approximately 180 horses have access to oats, including many of the very old original BLM mustangs.
  3. Mares Match Milk Replacer for rescued foals - $84 per 20 lb bucket.
  4. Gelding - Approximately $8,000 - $12,000 per year, depending on how many studs get gelded and how many mares receive birth control vaccine.
  5. Fencing repairs and maintenance - $8,000 to 12,000 annually

Your contribution is making a difference and will help provide a safe harbor for these magnificent creatures.

Thank you so much for caring!
